Why is there no app for school?

One App… One Community… One School…

What is MySchool?

The year is 2020, and there appears to be an app for everything. From travel to entertainment, the list continues to expand as new apps hit the global market every single day. MySchool intends to simplify the application market, specifically for college and boarding school students. Why install a calendar app and a food app when you could simply install an app that does both? MySchool is a four in one application centered around convenience, specified to the college or boarding school you attend by providing students with a simplified yet efficient application with one goal in mind: improving way of life.

Pitch Video

The Four Core Tabs:

Accessible, Intuitive, Convenient

Feature #1: Calendar

MySchool’s Calendar tab is equipped with school events and sports matches uploaded by the school itself. Students have the ability to incorporate their own personal schedules onto their calendars: from class times to extracurricular activities. The user-friendly interface also includes a Task Manager feature: a highly requested “To-Do List” tab allowing students to organize their assignments and activities on a daily basis.

Feature #2: Budgeting

From a study we conducted amongst 100 boarding school students and 100 college students, 75% of students claimed to have never “managed their own money before attending boarding school or college (respectively). Keeping this statistic in mind, our team has worked tirelessly to incorporate an intuitive budgeting feature into our app. The Budgeting tab allows students to have their first experience managing their own money, displaying their allowance/income and each purchase made. Students may set daily, weekly, or monthly allowances, allowing them to limit spending and keep track of each and every purchase.

Feature #3: Food and Restaurants

The Food and Restaurants tab screams convenience. Not only does this tab operate like traditional food applications such as providing menus and locations of local restaurants, but the experience is specialized for the student. MySchool will notify its users of various wait times, allowing students to see when and where they can eat in between classes. Students can see which restaurants tend to be more student-friendly, and can even place orders or make reservations through the Food and Restaurants tab.

Feature #4: Social

The Social tab incorperates some of the most excitiing features of our app. It first comes equiped with an annoncement inbox, allowing students to send and receive all school messages. The Live Chat feature allows students to communicate in real time: enabling students to ask questions, plan events, or simply invite students over all in real time. Finally, the Snap Shot feature allows students to send small snapshots to the entire community—virtually working as a party tracker. Students will be able to visible see where students are engaging with one another.

About the Founder:

MySchool was “founded” by Ian Staines, a young aspiring entreprenuer from Los Angeles, California. Staines will graduate from The Taft School this spring, a boarding school in Watertown, CT, where he credits his idea for the app. This fall, Staines will be attending Babson College, ranked #1 for entrepreneurship in the world for over twenty years where he aspires to transform his aspirations into reality.

Hi Ian! I really like the app that you had created…it was super creative and intuitive. I really like your overall topic and your response to something that is important to you. The amount of effort you inputted into your project was super evident and it turned out great. Apps are super vital, especially in the 21st century where technology is everywhere nowadays. What are your favorite apps to use for educational purposes?

    • April 24, 2020 by Katie

Mr. Staines I am thoroughly impressed! As a student I could see myself using your app. Keep the great ideas coming. The future looks bright for a budding entrepreneur like you!

      Hey Andrea,

Thank you for your kind words! To honestly respond to your question, I’ve been using close to none. That’s one of the reasons I came up with the idea, I was asking myself “Why is there no app for school?” Other than occasionally using apps like Quizlet and Duolingo, I haven’t been using anything else!

  2. April 24, 2020 by Mutin

Hi Ian! I thoroughly was interested in your app. Some questions that came up for me were why you decided to pitch the app for colleges, boarding schools, and not for high school? Have you considered problems such as a consumer who is able to make announcements to a college that the consumer is not attending? As a result of my last question, are you thinking ahead in cyberbullying protocols or protocols for misinformation and fake news?

    • April 24, 2020 by Ian

      Hi Mutin,

Thank you for the insightful questions! I was initially targeting a more independent audience because I assumed there would be a higher demand for the app I am offering. For example, the budget feature would mostly be utilized by students away from home for the first time, lacking an experience managing money. This being said, I believe if the app increased in popularity amongst colleges and universities, I’d consider expanding to high schools and even middle schools. Regarding bullying, there will certainly be parameters set in place such as word censors to counteract bullying. Students who violate the terms of service will be banned from the app, and the institution the student attends may issue consequences as it sees fit.

    Hi Ian,
I love the concept of this app! Especially now with so many schools doing distance learning, it is more important than ever to keep things streamlined and easy to access. My school has had issues recently with using multiple website (both Powerschool Learning and GoogleClassroom), because Powerschool kept crashing and GoogleClassroom was a crutch to use in the meantime. However, it is now very confusing to remember where to look for assignments, as not everything is in the same place! This app would solve this problem completely!

    • April 25, 2020 by Ian

      Hey Charlotte!

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve heard of similar issues regarding Powerschool and GoogleClassroom. My hope is this app solves many issues regarding the uniformity of a school and its digital learning, however, both platforms are certainly competition for my app.

  4. April 24, 2020 by Ozzy

Ian, this is a great project and one that is really relevant. My project is actually similar, but I like that yours is tailored to the specific needs of boarding school and college students. What are your next steps?

    • April 25, 2020 by Ian

My next steps are to research ways to expand the brand: how do I attract the attention of Colleges? I need to find a way to publicize the app while keeping costs minimal.

  5. April 24, 2020 by Jadyn

    Hi Ian,
I think that your app is a really good idea, especially for boarding schools and colleges. I love that you managed to create a way so that students can access all aspects of their life on campus. One thing that I really love is that you found a way to help students budget. When your young and in high school or college budgeting is something that a lot of kids haven’t experienced before so I think it’s a great idea! I would like to know how long the ‘snap shots’ last and if just any student can post one?

    • April 25, 2020 by Ian

      Hey Jadyn!
Thank you for your kind words and feedback! To answer your question, the length of “snap shots” is TBD. I would most likely gather more data through survey various boarding schools and universities to determine the length of snap shots. As of right now, I’d like snap shots to be anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour long.

      • April 25, 2020 by Ian

And yes, any student attending the school would be able to post a snap shot. The institution’s IT department will be the admins of the service for the school, so only the IT department has the ability to “approve” students of the institution, which will help avoid students from other schools interfering in another institution’s MySchool.

  28. April 25, 2020 by mihika

Hi Ian, I think your idea is great! I think it’s really cool that you were able to incorporate a finances and budgeting tab to help students spend their money and track their spending, which I think might be something that sets you aside from other individual calendar and food apps. It’s great that you took a problem you related with and came up with a solution that might help so many students everywhere. I really hope you are able to go forward with this app because I would love to see the final app.

    • April 25, 2020 by Ian

Hey Mihika, thanks for the kind words! I aspire to create the app one day, and I hope you look out for it in the app store when that day finally comes!

  59. April 27, 2020 by Christopher

    Hi Ian,

I love the idea! The budgeting feature seems especially relevant for teens that are learning how to manage their money. Let’s say I have a child with a bad spending problem, possibly ordering too much DoorDash. Do I have complete access to cut off and freeze their allowance, or does it give the student a more independent role in their money management?

    • April 27, 2020 by Ian Staines

The child account would not have direct access to the bank account, but simply “allowance” money parents manually deposit.

  60. April 27, 2020 by Patina

Great job, Ian! Your presentation was very thorough and I love the idea of your app! I think that making an app that can do the work of 4+ other apps is a really smart way to design since we often find ourselves depending on several different apps each day to manage something like school. All of your features seem very relevant for the age demographic and I can see your project being really popular and helpful for students who struggle with things like budget or scheduling especially. As a junior, it’s really cool to know that this might very well be available to me when I’m in college, so I look forward to that! Good work!

  61. April 27, 2020 by Mike Harp

Very well done. Good luck on this and all your future endeavors.

  62. April 27, 2020 by Meghan Campbell

This is such a great idea, I wish this was an option when I went to school!

  63. April 28, 2020 by Steve O

Great Idea Ian. I definitely could have used this when I was in school. Cannot wait to see it become a reality. Good luck.
